Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera truncata) is not a cactus of the type typically associated with sometimes-cold desert climates. It is a forest cactus, an epiphyte that grows naturally in moss and rotting leaves that collect in the crotches of tree limbs in shady, humid forests on the southeastern coast of Brazil. Although a drop in temperature is needed to get it to bloom in late December, it cannot tolerate freezing.
Christmas Cactus and Latitude
Plant hormones often respond to length of day and falling temperatures, causing fruit to ripen and deciduous trees to lose their leaves in fall. Latitude determines the length of day. For example, Porto Alegre on the southeast coast of Brazil, is 30 degrees south latitude while San Diego, California, is 32 degrees north latitude. These cities share roughly the same length of darkness to daylight on winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. That comes in late June in Porto Alegre and late December in San Diego. If you live north of San Diego, you have to manipulate light and temperature indoors to get Christmas cactus to bloom on Christmas.
Temperature
An outdoor temperature of 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the spring and summer growing season is best, although the Christmas cactus can tolerate temperatures from 90 to 100 F. It will prosper with an indoor temperature of 65 to 70 F. Buds typically form by late October or early November. Do not put the cactus near heating or air-conditioning vents or in drafty spots. A drop in temperature to 50 to 55 F will cause the plant to flower, no matter the length of darkness and light. While Christmas cactus will survive typical winter home temperatures, its flowers will last longer at temperatures between 50 and 55 F. These temperatures correspond to U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zone 11 or higher. If your winter temperatures drop below that range, grow your Christmas cactus indoors and wait for warm weather before moving it outdoors.
Humidity
In addition to appropriate temperature, Christmas cactus also needs humidity. If the humidity is low and temperature is high, it may drop its buds. To provide humidity, grow your cactus in a pot with a drain hole, and set it on a tray of pebbles and water. Keep the soil moist, but not soggy.
Light, Pot and Soil
While dropping the temperature will trigger Christmas cactus hormones, so will mimicking autumn darkness and daylight hours. Giving it 16 hours of darkness and eight hours of light will encourage the formation of buds. To simulate night, simply stash it in a dark closet. Christmas cactus grows best when it is pot-bound, meaning its roots are slightly cramped, a rough approximation of its origin in limb crotches. It also likes a potting mix rich in organic matter.

Identify the Easter cactus. Unlike the closely related Christmas cactus the Easter cactus is sold in spring in bloom, starting from March or April. However, if you're in a more well stocked garden center or plant specialist, you might probably run into leftover Christmas cacti on clearance. These two, as well as the Thanksgiving or crab cactus, also are sold as 'holiday cacti'.- Easter cactus, unlike Christmas cactus, has long cladophylls (leaves), which are oval and plain, not short and toothed, wavy or scalloped. The Easter cactus also has flowers that are more open then the other species. The other ones are more closed up, like tulips, and weeping.
- Epiphyllum or orchid cactus are more robust and larger plants than Easter cactus and are often hybrids of other Epiphyllum species as well as Easter cactus. These plants can be found in bloom anytime spring or summer. You can always ask the dealer or nursery attendant for confirmation of species. Orchid cactus has wavy cladophylls (leaves) that set it apart from Easter cactus.
- Dwarf Easter cactus, Rhipsalidopsis rosea (pink flowers) and spring cactusRhipsalidopsis gaertneri (bright scarlet - orange red flowers) are the two main species sold at the same time. Dwarf is smaller and more suitable for smaller rooms.
- The Rhipsalidopsis and Hatiora names are used for the same species. Also there are new hybrids and colors coming around in the plant trade. New colors are hot (bubblegum/fuchsia pink), white and salmon peach colors.
